At Saint Mary's happiness and good times are contagious .

At St. Mary's, we have
experienced the
academic side of life
. . . the social side of
life . . . and the
spiritual side of life

Someone to laugh with, to

cry with, to grow with

. . . this is what

friendship at St. Mary's

means. Without the girls,

the school would be no

more than buildings and

trees.

10

Bringing the
community together to
worship and pray and
learn is very important
in the life at St.
Mary's. The chapel
symbolizes the
atmosphere of caring
which exists here . . .
an atmosphere which
results in the growth
of the whole person.

12

Life at St. Mary's helps you accept

other people for what they are . . .

and begin to realize

what you can become.

13

14

. . . You are a part of
me, inside of me,
growing all the time.
You helped me laugh,
and you helped me
play, and you wiped
away my tears.

15

16

As you go, do not forget all that you have given to St. Mary's and
all that she, in return, has given to you. You will always be a part of
St. Mary's because the true St. Mary's spirit never dies . . . And in
diis way St. Mary's is a special way of life.

The Freshman class is
composed of 83
individuals who have their
own personal outlook and
opinion. The unity of the
class depends on pride;

pride to do the best, and in
February give the best
dance to the Sophomores.
Our major project is the
Freshman/Sophomore
dance, for which many

have worked hard, but the
greatest accomplishment
is the uniting of 83 into
one.

CLASS OFFICERS: Julie Parson
— pres.; Jane Bratton — treas.;
Susan Eatman — sec; Cissy-
Davis — vice pres.

During the 1977-1978
school year, the Senior
class of approximately 124
students has made various
contributions to the over
all spirit of the school.
During the Octoberfest
weekend several
ambitious students got
together and set up a
bobbing for apples booth
to raise money. Also, raffle
tickets were sold for a
delicious $30.00 meal at
the Angus Barn. On
November 1 1th, the Senior
Dance was held at Howard
Johnsons which proved to
be an exciting night for all.

"Seventh of May"
provided excellent beach
and disco music and
although die attendance
wasn't as high as expected;
everyone there seemed to
be thoroughly enjoying
themselves. The
Junior-Senior party in the
cafeteria during November
proved to be a fantastic
break from a dreary month
of term papers and tests.
The Seniors waitressed for
the Juniors and several
skits were performed
which highlighted the
evening. By the end of the
party, the Seniors were left
with sore feet and the
Juniors widi full stomachs.
All in all the party was,
once again, a tremendous

success.

In order to increase the
Senior bank account,
phone books witii
everyone's name, phone
number, and home phone
number were sold which
was surely a great relief to
the switchboard operators!
Also, painted flower pots
were sold which added to
die beauty of dormitory
windows. "Traveling
Trinkets" came around
during late November and
a very nice profit was made
from the selling of
necklaces, bracelets,
earrings, and
miscellaneous objects.

The Junior-Senior
Dance, featuring the
"Tarns", is planned for

February 18di. Hopefully,
it will be as successful as
last year's. Also, the
Seniors will beat the
Juniors in the annual
powder puff football game;
so look out Juniors!

The Senior Class' main
objective is to leave die
money earned during the
year to fix up a parlor in
one of the Senior dorms or
use it to buy a badly
needed ice machine in one
of die dorms. The Senior
class has really been a
great class this year and
hopefully next year's class
will carry out this tradition
of the "Super Seniors."

When I first came here I was all alone

Filled with dreams and tears.

I thought that the day would never come

When I would meet a friend like you —

You helped me be me by the things that you do.

But soon it will be my time
To take the step aside.
But in your truth, love, and faith,
I will always abide.

The kind of closeness that once when gone
We'll never find again.
Although the same faces cannot be found,
Your strength will always remain, and stay
with us forever and ever again.

When I decided to give you that first chance

You took me in your arms;

And showed me which way I should go.

But you never pushed too hard, you

let me grow at my very own pace.

Such strenght and faith, I'll never forget —
No matter how many years.
You are a part of me, inside of me, growing all
the time. You helped me laugh, and you helped
me play, and you wiped away my tears.

But soon it will be my time

To take the step aside.

But in your truth, love, and faith

I will always abide . . .

I will always abide.

INTRAMURAL
SPORTS

This is the first year for the Intramurals
program at St. Mary's. It is designed purely to
stimulate interest in die total physical
education program and to encourage
participation. This program took the place of
Sigma-Mu. It is organized in such a manner so
that there are two leagues which equally
divide the dormitories and day students.
There are team and individual sports, and die
winner from each advances to die campus
championship. Each participant receives a
certain number of points, and at the end of the
year, awards are given. So far, the program has
been a success and there has been a great deal
of participation.

<*

Through the
curriculum of the
Fine Arts
department, SMC
students develop
both appreciation
of the arts and skill
in their

development. A
close-knit music
department
composed of Dr.
Quinn, Miss
Thompson, Miss
Haig, and "Mama"
Ishee always

provide the sincere
guidance necessary
for budding
musical talents. A
Mime Troop and
theatrical arts
under die
leadership of Miss
Rose and Mr.
Callahan, provide
an excellent outlet
for the talented and
the observer.
Whether pottery,
printmaking or
painting is your

desire, the SMC art
department, staffed
by Mrs. Adams and
Mrs. Williams,
enables a girl to
develop her
abilities to their
fullest. Regardless
of the art form SMC
girls choose, skill
in expressing
oneself and
appreciating the
talents of others'
results.

140

On October 24th and 25th St. Mary's held its
annual "Thomas Wolfe Fest". It was opened to
the public and was free of charge. The event
centered around the Wolfe collection in the St.
Mary's library. It was here in the Library that Fred
Wolfe thrilled the students of St. Mary's by telling
them about his brother Thomas.

The Thomas Wolfe Collection was established
by Dr. and Mrs. John O. Fulenwider, Jr. in the fall
of 1975. There are approximately 800 items in the
collection and it is still growing. The collection
includes first editions of Wolfe's works, letters,
photographs, critical material, and various other
things. Also found in the collection is a pencil
sketch of Fred Wolfe done by Marcy Connors,
who is a S.M.C. college graduate from the class of
1977. The Thomas Wolfe Collection has also been
supplemented by generous gifts from Aldo P.
Magi and Richard Walser.

PARENTS' WEEKEND

142

This year a new
event was introduced
at St. Mary's, Parents'
Weekend. On
Friday, the parents
attended classes with
their daughters. A
carnival and blue
grass festival on back
campus highlighted
Saturday's program.
Many clubs
sponsered booths as a
fund raising project.
During the afternoon,
students as well as
visitors were
entertained by the

Masquers Mime
Company and the
Cold Cuts. The
climax of the
weekend was a dance
in the National Guard
Armory. The Popular
music group "Janis"
performed for the
dance. The weekend
proved to be a
thoroughly enjoyable
one for the girls and
their parents. Once
more the true St.
Mary's spirit shined
through.

A new club, The Masquer's Mime Co.,
was formed in the fall of '77. Their first
production, a one hour Christmas program
entitled "A Silent Night" was held on
December 8th and 9th. The Masquer's
Mime Co. performed at several
elementary schools, held workshops, and
appeared on the March of Dimes
Telethon in March. Several of the
members of the Co. went to the Mime
School in Tampa, Florida during Spring

DAY STUDENTS

154

A day student
contributes
much to the life
of Saint Mary's.
As a group we
have left an
indellible mark
on the school
that has long
since become a
tradition. Our
daily activities
are blended
together with
those of the
boarding
students
constituting the
total curriculum
of St. Mary's.
Therefore, we
consider
ourselves an
integral part of
the community.

The
significance of
our social life
was enriched
through the
various projects
in which there
was complete
participation.

We have fond
rememberances
of the

Octoberfest, the
flea market, the
remodeling of
the Day Student
House, our
sharing in
sports, and
many other
activities all of
which welded
us together.

In retrospect,
we have gained
experience and
increased
knowledge. We
accepted a
challenge,
along the way
we stumbled,
had our
apprehensions
but we arrived
more mature
persons.
Through it al
we shared the
joy of loving
and being
loved.

The 1977-1978
edition of the
Stagecoach is
dedicated to Mrs.
Helen Smith in
gratitude for her
contributions to the St.
Mary's community.
Few people take the
time to walk that extra
mile. She has earned
the love and respect of
the many girls whose
lives she has touched
throughout her years

at St. Mary's.
Constantly, she
devotes her time and
energy to helping
those around her. In
the classroom, her
enthusiasm for
learning affects
everyone. As a result
of Mrs. Smith's efforts,
she has helped make
St. Mary's a special
way of life, and for this
contribution we thank
her.

What is to come we know not. But we know,

That what has been was good — was good to show.

Better to hide, and best of all to bear.

We are the masters of the days that were;

We have lived, we have loved, we have suffered .

Excerpts from WHAT IS TO COME
By William Henley

162

St. Mary's is a unique school. Traditions and school spirit unite
the girls who choose to come here. A nostalgic feeling constantly
fills the air, because the same school spirit which was instituted
in 1842 has prevailed throughout the years. The 1977-78 school
year was no exception.

St. Mary's has provided us with a shelter, challenged us with
countless educational experiences, and nurtured us with a love
and warmth which can only be coined as the "St. Mary's Spirit".
Yes, "we are masters of the days that were." However, we can
never capture the spirit that was. No, the spirit of the 1977-78
school year must disband, accompanied by the graduates, and
the close of another year.

Yet, the TRUE spirit of St. Mary's shall never die. It will exist
forever.
